Since publishing AIQ: Rethinking Human–AI Capability, I have been in conversation with many of you about the five dimensions while working on the agentic AIQ test. What became clear is that the boundary between dimension 3 (Anticipating Failures) and dimension 4 (Verification & Ethics) is not crisp. Dimension 3 was about detecting failure modes such hallucination and sycophancy, Dimension 4 folded in correcting failures alongside a different competency on ethics. I realized that detection and correction belong together while ethics is its own dimension. Here is the realignment:
Dimension 3 becomes failure detection and correction. Recognizing hallucinations, sycophancy, and other AI failure modes is the first part. Verifying outputs against sources and correcting or discarding flawed results is the logical second part.
That frees dimension 4 to focus on ethics. This came up a lot with the film project I'm working on (more later) and I feel it deserves a full dimension. At the same time, the regulatory environment around AI is expanding globally. So dimension 4 becomes ethics and judgment. This includes questions of fairness, harm, transparency, consent, and appropriate use as well as applying human values and guardrails and staying current with the regulatory frameworks.
The new five dimensions of AIQ now become:
- Prompting: crafting clear, adaptive instructions that match AI's strengths.
- Context awareness: knowing what additional information the AI has or needs.
- Failure detection and correction: recognizing failures, verifying and correcting outputs.
- Ethics and judgment: applying human values, guardrails, and regulatory compliance.
- Workflow integration: embedding AI in processes that yield reliable value.
Next, I'll be updating the AIQ test on myaiq.org to reflect this realignment. The current multiple-choice test was always meant as a placeholder, and the next version will be a true agentic chat based test with assignments and evaluations. Here's a simple preview of the new dimension 3: myaiq.org/pilot-511dfd.html
